Project type

3D print, Objects, Feedback, Geometric shapes

2023

Preotira, South Africa

Ephemera is a twelve-part series of sculptural objects created through a 3D printing process using opaque white plastic. Each form was built up in thin layers, with some pieces requiring temporary support structures during printing, which were removed afterwards. The finished works are displayed individually on found metal stands made from machined industrial sheets.

The objects originated from a digital text collage created from my MA Fine Art writing and research. Individual text layers were imported into a 3D modelling program, where they were extruded and combined into three-dimensional digital collages. These were then simplified by reducing the number of their geometric planes until they formed abstract yet structured objects. These shapes revealed how the interface interpreted and interacted with the text as 3D objects.

The objects portray the ephemeral and delicate nature of the revision process, contrasted with the industrial cutting and copying of metal into precise parts.
