Ambient Abstraction is a series of analogue photographs made by placing crinkled, unexposed photo paper and a sound-to-light unit inside a light-tight box. The unit converts ambient sound into pulses that power LEDs, exposing the paper in response to surrounding noise in the studio or gallery.
The resulting images, titled 'Ambient Abstractions' (2023), feature dynamic, abstract exposures—sometimes revealing LEDs or wires—that visually represent the aural residues of their creation.
The images were displayed both as unflattened photo paper and as enlarged perspex prints that interact with the audience’s space. Through interaction, the plastic surface of the perspex became static, attracting dust from the surrounding environment and adding an additional layer of accumulated traces.
