Iteration II
Project type
Exhibition, installation, participation, interactive, contemporary art
Date
2023
Location
Pretoria, South Africa
Following Iteration I, Iteration II introduced slightly different materials and arrangements to explore the audience's reaction. Wooden plinths and tables were positioned diagonally to evoke the atmosphere of a workshop that invites change and participation. White plinths replaced the previous black metal ones, allowing marks, scratches, and material residues to become more visible.
The exhibition included thin wax sheets, bronze cast objects, rust flakes, recycled paper, silicone objects, two large-scale ink drawings, copper strips and flakes, embossed paper textures, scratched acetate sheets, and various found objects. These materials were distributed across plinths, tables, and the floor, with some suspended from the ceiling. Over time, both the materials and the display structures bore visible traces of interaction.
The installation was designed to encourage active engagement and spatial negotiation. Participants approached the wax sheets sculpturally, folding them into boxes or envelopes to contain objects they found in the space. Hanging acetate sheets were folded into temporary storage forms, while copper flakes were embedded into acetate on the floor, with attention given to the sound produced during contact. Bronze cast objects were repurposed as tools to manipulate other materials and inscribe marks onto the plinths.
Unlike in *Iteration I*, participants in *Iteration II* also moved the plinths themselves, reshaping the flow and presentation of the space. The plinths shifted from passive display devices to active materials within the exhibition. This transition signalled a growing comfort among participants—not only in rearranging objects, but in restructuring the spatial framework itself—transforming the exhibition into a mutable environment shaped collectively through interaction.
