A word that does not exist

Project type

Self portrait, Pinhole photographs, experimetal, Artificial intelligence

2020

Artificial intelligence cannot imagine the realities they are expressing and lacks the relation that concepts of existence have within the 'real world'. For this project, I used artificially created words and their definitions to make visual representations in the 'real world'. The longevity of the pinhole process allows for full immersion within the world and situational environment. The pinhole camera captures and presents the body as a living object, further juxtaposing the machine and reality.

When placing an image and words next to each other, the encoded meanings fluctuate because they evoke their own ‘words’ through each individual’s knowledge. Images have their own encoded meanings as well and don’t always match our interpretations. Each photo then becomes a translation of the words and vice versa, limiting reality, and urging the viewer to question cognition, creation and reality.

By allowing the non-existent, generated and unbodied machine to describe and direct the body within an environment, the viewer is left to find their own version of knowledge through its absurdity.
