Assemblage (steel, wood and silicone)
Project type
Sculpture, Assemblage, Metal, Welding, Silicone
Date
2023
Location
Pretoria, South Africa
These assemblaged sculptures were created as poetic interpretations and recordings of the audience's interactions within an exhibition. I used found metal objects (residues from a machining process), which I discovered when visiting a scrap yard, to initiate a series of assemblages. I found their shapes and textures to be mesmerising and sculptural due to the distortion they endured thus far on their journey to the scrapyard.
I decided to create assemblages by combining the metal objects with found materials in my shared studio space. These materials were copper strips and discarded sculpting wood. By using these found and previously discarded objects, the assemblages became homages to the artistic and machine labour they were born.
Incorporating the work from other artists with whom I shared the space, and forcing the materials to interact and form one entity. This sparked a kind of feedback loop where the materials respond, interact and relax into each other’s materialities and spaces.
